ST PETER’S CATHEDRAL CARILLON
On 26 October, 1996, the then Dean of the Cathedral, the Very Reverend Lindsay Newby, dedicated a newly-installed peal of eight bells in the Cathedral Tower. The recently-restored century-old Hunter pipe organ and a guest choir presented music during the service. Then a visiting team of Sydney bell-ringers rang the first peal, ‘Grandsire Triples’. Present also in the bell-chamber was the Armidale team of bell-ringers in training. Outside the brightly-lit Tower a display of fireworks cascaded over the Cathedral buildings.
Largely responsible for the success of the project was Mr John Goldsmith, a member of the 2/33rd Battalion AIF, founding Principal of Duval High School from 1974 to 1981, Chairman of the Bells Trust Committee. All the bells are commemorative and all are gifts, personal or corporate. John Goldsmith and his wife Merle presented the Sixth Bell, celebrating the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary, their Jubilee, the previous year. Its inscription begins: ‘O Sing Unto the Lord a New Song’.
